Two years ago, I had a trigger finger when it came to packaging.
If a video didn’t do well out of the gate, I was going to change the packaging about 4 to 5 times until something changed.
Honestly, that never worked. But it’s what every YouTube influencer tells you to do, which is … flat out wrong.
This is the process you should follow.
CTR doesn’t matter.
Average View Duration (AVD) doesn’t matter.
The only metrics you should concern yourself with are Views and Impressions.
Those are the only metrics that give you some actual information on what is happening with a video in the algorithm.
So, the screenshot above shows that views are not doing well… but impressions are still growing.
Impressions
As long as impressions are going up, we MUST allow the current packaging to complete its course on YouTube.
This seemingly passive approach does require a couple of things to be sure you are doing it right.
#1. The packaging you have for your video (the title and thumbnail) must be researched, and you should have confidence that it will cause curiosity and get the click.
This usually means coming up with the thumbnail and title BEFORE you create the video.
When you put enough time into the packaging, you will be confident that YouTube will find the right audience. This only comes with practice and bouncing your idea off friends and people who have no interest in your video topic.
#2. Patience. It’s hard not to touch the packaging as you let it run its course in the algorithm. I literally would walk away from my computer to stop myself from working on another thumbnail.
When impressions flatline for a few days, THEN you can change the packaging.
YouTube is testing this video, and it will eventually give up on it if it cannot find an audience for it. Something about the video is not beating what is currently available for the topic.
When you think of YouTube in this way, you are in more control other than simply thinking the algorithm hates you.
The algo couldn’t care less. It’s want’s satisfied viewers and that is it. If what you are putting out there is not beating the current market, the video will flatline.
This happens with EVERY video on YouTube, including Mr. Beasts.
